About AirLife™ Spirometers

Initially introduced by Vyaire Medical, the Cardinal Health AirLife™ Volumetric Incentive Spirometer is built to be comfortably held by the patient while they perform exercises for deep breathing therapy. Using a spirometer improves respiratory capacity by encouraging slow, deep breaths that open the air sacs and strengthen the lungs. Regular use increases lung capacity and keeps your respiratory system healthy. Patients may be given or directed toward this device as they recover from a broken rib or punctured diaphragm and are prescribed a series of breathing exercises for their recovery.

The AirLife™ Incentive Spirometer offers dual-sided calibrations, making it easy for the patient to read volumes up to 4,000 mL. The adjustable goal indicator is positioned at the desired capacity, creating an eventual target for the patient, and can be changed as their lung capacity improves.

As the patient breathes into the flexible tubing with an adjustable mouthpiece, their breath lifts the indicator ball. When patients can no longer breathe out, they hold their breath for a few seconds before exhaling slowly. Patients are further recommended to cough after each interval to remove mucus. Intervals of 10 are recommended for each session.
